I have been specifically prohibited from picking the 'Niners in any future game. My beloved is convinced that I am "jinxing her boys". I don't actually believe in fan-magic, hexes or totems or voodoo. I do believe that Colin Kaepernick is suffering from a crisis of confidence, and this week will be no easier. I have followed the career of Coach Jeff Fisher for 2 decades. His mutant coaching power is to force an opponent to second guess. The trick plays, the stunt kicks and the triple laterals, those aren't only meant to be successful. They are meant to shake certainty, and Kaepernick is already on uncertain footing. Add to that Aldon Smith's rehab adventure, Bolden being dinged up, Frank Gore bitching about his coach and the Rams having home field on a short week. Regardless of my wife's admonishments, I wouldn't pick San Fransisco this week.
Folks, In the NFL there appear to be 4 levels of bad. There is the 'we made too many mistakes, Week 1 New York Giants' bad. Then there is the 'we don't have your talent' level of bad. There is the 'we shouldn't be on the same field as you' bad (Jacksonville Jaguars). Then there is the lowest level, the 'Week 3 New York Giants' bad. The pundits keep asking, 'Should New York be worried'? No. This should be a 4-alarm freak out panic attack. My Washington and Dallas fan friends will happily lay this malaise on the narrow shoulders of Younger Brother, but this is not Eli's fault. He threw for 460 yards in the 6 turn-over stink fest in the TajMaJones. This week, he was sacked 3 times in the first 5 minutes of game time, and 5 times in the first 17. This is not right for a Coughlin team. Hakeem Nicks is whining that he didn't get thrown to. I ask, how many of the 8 plays where Eli landed on his back were meant for Nicks, and how many blocks did Hakeem miss in that game? Jersey is in a deep hole, and I'm not talking about the 0 - 3 record.
Brian Hoyer is my new man-crush. But I get the funny feeling he upset the Cleveland ownership because they want first dibs in the 2014 draft. Mr. Jimmy Haslan? Let this kid play; he's really good.
The Lions will not be as good without Nate Burleson, who broke his arm in a traffic accident. The Ravens will just go on being annoying with Jacoby Jones having a head injury caused by a stripper hitting him with a bottle.
