A couple of requests for those who really don't seem to get it.
First, quit telling us all that you used to be a lefty, but are now disgusted with the stance the left has taken. You never got it in the first place, so why proclaim that you did? Your use of the term "lefty" proves that you have categorized everyone in such a way that you can willfully dismiss those whose reasoning doesn't agree with yours, and that is not the Democratic way, or the ideal of those who are left of center. If you believe that people have the right to choose for themselves, their form of governance, than you're a lefty. If you believe that the social contract requires our support and acceptance of those less fortunate in circumstance, than you're a lefty. If you believe that killing people and violence in the name of holy God doesn't foster peace, than you're a lefty. If you ever believed these things, and don't now, than quit blaming the left for your change in opinion. That shirks your responsibility and looks weak to my eyes. The left didn't change, you did. Don't blame me for your lack of conviction.
Second, quit speaking for moderates as if you have any idea how we feel. I am a moderate Democrat, and more Libertarian than you will ever believe. I hold fast to the view that Bush is incompetant, letting his advisors and handlers control the country to their benefit, and not at all in my name. Quit telling the world that we are all rejecting the lefty view of the world, just because we really are all Bush-Haters, when in fact we aren't. You obviously don't understand the "lefty" view at all, so how can your impotent world view speak for mine? It can't. Don't speak for me. It's inaccurate and really pisses me off. Don't, for the love of God, tell me what I think. That will piss me off more than anything Chomsky has ever said or written.
This post inspired by the comments to this.
*old geezer mode*
Why I remember the day, when my mother referred to all Leftists, which included the ACLU, as "communists" out to take down the country...
She thought of them all as traitors, musing in her more Manhattened moods that they should all be lined up and shot.
Did four decades really just pass me by?
I'm going to go take another long nap.

Yikes!
Getting into it with those that like to lump others can be fun, but it tends to take up a lot of time because much of it involves talking past each other, taking things out of context, and suffering through the unwillingness to concede any point.
I get sucked into those threads so easy too. The next thing I know is I've got this urge to write pages of text debunking idea after idea.
At some point I'm going to have to look up where Chomsky claims the USA is evil, but considering that I got too depressed after 100 pages of "Manufacturing Dissent" to go on it may never happen.

Looks like you and I were on the same page recently.

When I see that kind of dialogue I'm always reminded of the old wisecrack "There are only two kinds of people; those who categorize people and those who don't."
