The NFL Is Rigged!

{This tongue-in-cheek post was originally published on January 14th, 2004, after an unbelievable comeback by the Eagles over the Packers.  Since it's still getting comments (and remains the number 1 Google hit for "NFL is rigged"), I decided to repost it here, complete with comments.}

Way back when I entered highschool we had a new history teacher, Mr. McCoulaugh.  He was an okay teacher, in fact slightly better than many, but he only stayed at my school for a couple of years.  He was replaced by an amiable little guy, Mr. Shook, who was altogether boring, but likable all the same.  A couple of years after I graduated, Mr. Shook and his wife unfortunately became the victims of Montana's own serial killer, Wayne Nance.  That's a tragic story in and of itself ... but I digress.

It was pretty obvious that Mr. McCoulaugh was hired as much to be a football coach as to be an instructor.  It seems that he had played for at least a couple of years in the NFL, for the Redskins if I recall correctly.  I'm not sure that made him all that great a coach however.  For our first Freshman football game, the coaches didn't notice that we had only 11 players in uniform until about 15 minutes from kickoff.  I'm not sure they would have cared, except that the opponents fielded about 60 guys, including many of their Varsity squad.  Our coach's solution ... suit up one guy from the JV squad.  Our gameplan was simple enough:  don't get killed.  That was a long and painful afternoon, I can tell you.  But I digress.

I remember Mr. McCoulaugh mostly because of what happened one day in history class.  I've no recollection of how he got off on the topic, but Mr. M boldly told us all that the NFL was rigged, fixed, as much a fraud as pro Wrestling.  One of his examples for proof was how the upstart AFL was so quickily able to dominate in the SuperBowl.  My fragile psyche wasn't at all harmed by this revelation; I just chocked it up to him being a disillusioned loon.  I expect that the business of pro football leaves many ex-players grasping such fantastical straws of conspiracy.  But I digress.

Last Sunday evening, I found myself believing Mr. McCoulaugh.  I don't believe that Green Bay could have given the game to Philly any more obviously than if they'd have put wrapping paper on the ball.  I'm not even talking about that wildly (stupidly) thrown interception in overtime.  Come on, people, you all saw it, or heard about it.  Ahman Green and Najeh Davenport were running all over the Eagles defense on the outside and off tackle.  4th and goal with only a yard to go, and the Packers rush straight into the teeth of the Eagle's interior line.  We'll call that Coach Sherman's bold little gift to the city of Philidelphia's legendary mystique of toughness.  No field goal, no slant run, no Favre heroics.

Packers, 4th and one foot.  Make the first down, and you win the game.  Where was the boldness, then?  No, go ahead and punt, Packers.  Is that what the big market sponsers phoned in for you to do?  Woa, that defense penetrates and sacks McNabb.  Push and hold and you win the game.  Okay, its 4th and 26 for the Eagles.  Here's where I really began to believe that the fix was in.    Al Harris and the Green Bay secondary had had a really good day against the pass, forcing McNabb to beat them with his feet.  Two sacks push the Eagles into "no-damn-way" territory.  The D-line should have charged like rabid Cujo clones, the secondary only had to bump at the line and cover 2 on the the long ball.  4th and 26, and McNabb completes a pass when the receiver is covered by 3 defenders.

Right then I knew it was over.  The fix was in, and Coach McCoulaugh was right that the NFL was rigged.  I've come back to my senses since then, and I no longer believe that any human power has the line on the NFL.  Its God.  He's toying with the game I love, as a cat paws at low hanging tree ornaments.  Yep, the All-Mighty is having a hell of a good time with the NFL this year, I can tell you.  Cincinnati-KC, Arizona-Minnesota, this stuff is unnatural, tricksy, false.  But I digress.  This game is rigged, all right, and none of us mere-mortals have a clue how it goes.  So lets enjoy the ride while we can.

The key to the NFL is KNOWING that it is staged. I picked the Patriots to win from the start of the season, and I rode them all season to a Super Bowl victory for a season total of $11,440!!
You know, they tricked alot of people into believing that the Packers were a "destined team" blah, blah, blah. Yeah right, put your money on the Packers you fools. Put your money on KC, and all the other teams they have tricked you into believing are good.
Then they also bring the Panthers out of nowhere, and major $$$ is lost by fans of sports betting. But not me, oh no, I've known that the NFL goes by scripts, and the Panthers were gold for me dring the playoffs. Thank you NFL, for if it wasnt for your set-ups and forced drama, I'd never have enough cash for my new car!

All my life I never liked football nor did my husband then in our 60's we became not just die hard fans but suffered a total obsessed addiction of the NFL.

1 season into this serious addiction--I noticed a lot of bad ref. calls with certain teams our favorite team played. mmmph! I said--how can that be. Then we had one team in our division that we hadn't beat in years and lo and behold we slaughter them not once but twice and the amazing thing was this was not our best year. mmmmph! Then the next week we play a team that has suffered numerous injured players and lose! Several bad ref calls. mmmph!

Did anyone notice that the owners of these teams are business men and only one NFL owner is a former NFL player?

My soulfull opinion is that the NFL is rigged somehow, someway, somehow.

When Sports Illustrated predicted the Carolina Panthers to win, I knew something was rotten in Denmark cause no way--Jake Delhommme number was up--he had his one good season and is finished. He lost his mojo last year. I must lay my addiction down.

James Frey's book A Million Little Pieces was more real than these NFL's games. The playoffs including the Super Bowl is rigged.

The "Tuck Rule" was the single worst call in NFL history. A perfect opportunity for the refs to take over the game and give it to the Patriots. I think that the entire 2001 football season was rigged in favor of the New England Patriots. It was just a few months after the infamous attack on the twin towers and the pentagon that the Patriots made their way into the playoffs after starting off the season with a 5-5 record. Everyone in America, at the time, still has a strong since of patriotism (which is what we should have after a horrible event) with the images of Sep. 11 still etched deeply in their minds.

A virtually unknown quarterback by the name of Tom Brady takes over in place of the injured Drew Bledsoe and leads the team to the playoffs.

With a team of unknown players the Patriots were to face the stacked Raiders team with Rice, Brown, Charles Woodson and Rich Gannon. It was a close game until the "tuck play" happened. Tom Brady clearly fumbles the ball and the Raiders jump on it thinking that the game had now become theirs to lose. Until, it gets reviewed. The refs say that Tom Brady had his arm in forward motion when the ball came out, but it was clearly stopped when the ball flew out. Thus, the "tuck rule."

The Patriots end up winning the game by an Adam Vinatieri field goal. They go on to make it to the Super Bowl where they face another stacked team (Rams) and won the game on the final play. I just find it ironic how the PATRIOTS won the Super Bowl right after Sept. 11th. Think about that.

Add another one to the tally of rigged games. Atlanta vs. New Orleans on sept. 25 2006. The story book game where the heroic saints reopen there newly renovated stadium, the site of tragedy last year, and magically beat one of the best teams in the league; Reviving the city and all its fans. Could you imagine if the saints would have lost last night?! That would have just been awkward, not too mention depressing, and not just for the fans but for the league as well. Football is the american sport and everything about it is supposed to be american and patriotic. (Refer to the post regarding the PATRIOTIC season after 9/11). It's symbol is NFL written on the flag! They couldnt let the falcons come in and win, so the NFL had to intervene to ensure its victory and its status as the most drama-packed sport. Don't forget the heroics and patriotism. It seemed as if the saints always knew exactly what the falcons were going to do on offense. It makes you wonder because all you really have to do is tell the other team’s defensive coordinator up in the booth what plays the opponent is picking, and he can relay a counter play back to the coach. It will work basically every time and it's not too unrealistic what with all the camera's, mic's etc all over the stadium. And why wouldn't you when it is the best business decision. I mean, c’mon there laughable defence shut down the most prolific running game in the nfl? They ran a record 552 yards on the panthers and the bucs (teams actually known for defence) and the “barely-beat-browns” stopped them like they were from the CFL. Not to mention the ref’s, who made some extremely shady calls (they're in on it too. who do you think they talk to when they go for a review?) Don't get me wrong what happened in New Orleans last year was a huge tragedy and I feel for them, they are truly heroic for their recovery, but im talking football. And the fact is that this game was just all too convenient and I, like God, do not play with dice and do not believe in coincidence. The NFL is the best run professional sports league in the history of mankind - a multi billion dollar corporation. In this United States so bent on making that extra dollar, it just suits them to have a capitalistic professional sports league like this to represent it. America loves drama and the NFL know$ it.

Superbowl XL

NFL is Rigged all sports are rigged. there is too much money involved. its too obivous a lot of the players need to take better acting classes so when they drop passes it doesnt look like they spiked it on the ground. Or HEY! maybe it's just a coincidence that 90% of the time that the team with more money bets on it loses the spread or even the game! I dont think so....it makes me sick when all those broadcasters and sports analysists sit there on their tv shows and talk all this bull crap about so and so has a good chance to win and so and so won the game because their defense stepped up and had a good game. kiss my butt! ESPN and the rest of the sports shows. u guys can quit with your games now. people are losing their lives and hard earned money because of your bs speculations. Maybe i shouldnt be complaining since after losing so much i finally caught on won it all back and im making myself a fortune due to these rigs!

nfl is rigged on its own and im pretty sure its in someway manipulated by the government. after 9/11 the patriots won the super bowl. what more of a morale booster could that be to our country? even thought our respective home teams lost its still the PATRIOTS. the team they beat was the panthers. the panthers were named after a black radical group from way back when who were completly against america and wanted to see its downfall. sure maybe coincidence, but then when the war on terror breaks out the patriots win again that year. possibly coincidence, but then you get hurricane katrina. the next biggest tradgedy in this country since 9/11. when the name united states saints started being used i knew that the saints were going to win the super bowl. last nigh against the eagles it was very obvious the refs and commentators were against the eagles, and it was clear the refs tryed to call back everything, even a clear fumble in the eagles favor made the ref pause for a good 10 seconds waiting for something else to happen when the play was over. even the cameramen, the entire game no1 one eagles fan was shown on camera except with less then a minute left when it was clear the eagles lost, they showed one depressed kid with an eagles jersey on, and somehow thruout the game they showed a girl with a "fuck da eagles" shirt on, and another guy with a poser of an eagles player getting hung which im pretty sure both are against fcc rukes and what not. how could the 3-13 saints last year go to this playoff team with only adding on reggie bush? joe horn is out and they still keep going. if they win this superbowl then i am convinced the nfl is rigged. in last nights game the eagles were down 3 with a little over 2 minutes left. the eagles go for it on 4th and 10 because they had to go for the 1st down. on a very bad false start call the eagles now have to go 4th and 15 but for some retarded reason they now decide to punt. even people who dont know much about football will tell u how dumb that is because the saints can easily run the clock out and the eagles had no timeputs left. it was definitly staged. future newspaper article ---- feel good story of the century, the united states saints, 3-13 last year and now the super bowl champions. who wouldve thought after so much devastation from hurrican katrina that it would come to this.

Mike you're a fucking idiot.
The Saints added Drew Brees who happens to be the best QB in the NFC, and in the top 3 QB's in the entire league. I do think the NFL is rigged. But please know your fucking facts.

ypaul, so ignorant to think it's not rigged. only ignorant fans want peyton manning to win the super bowl ... no true fan of the sport , bc true fans see how it all pans out to be rigged... the NFL is targeted to people just as you Paul... listen and understand

You guys really are idiots.

The NFL is not rigged.

For every Super Bowl that you are saying has been rigged, there have been 10 that you're not even taking into consideration.

If the Patriots were "chosen" to win that year, why did they become the dynasty of this decade, and win two more, not to mention still competing today.

What about SB 35 where the Giants played the Ravens. Is there any subliminal meaning to that one? There was no drama, no controversy, and the favorite team won.

And even if somehow you're right, and the NFL is scripted, why do you want to know? Root for your hometown team and enjoy the good games, whether you're team comes out on top or not.

IGNORANCE IS BLISS

Yes, the NFL is rigged. It has become a ratings scheme similar to but not as extreme as professional wrestling which became a joke since Hulk Hogan emerged from Terry Hogan. Over the years football has become more and more a huge money involved sport involving corporations, sponsors, and television(FOX, CBS, ABC, NBC) trying for more ratings. Contracts with big business who hold the strings of the players involved following their instructions to increase beer sales, lift ratings, thus increasing the profit. Not quite sure if the govt. is involved but the NFL has plenty to gain drawing peoples attention having the "Patriots" win recently where we're in wartime mainly due to terrorists. Makes great soap opera style story lines to suck people in for ratings just like wrestling has done over the years.
This year there were alot of firsts in the post season, biggest comeback in the AFC championship game, the first time 2 African-American coaches are in superbowl, and Peyton Manning's 'first' superbowl win. Great ways to sucker people into watching and improve ratings. I think the NFL and the tv corporations saw what wrestling became for ratings and decided to follow suit to improve the ratings of football games. Plenty of money available in doing so.

Today is February 4, 2007. Super Bowl XLI, or 41 for those who don't know, has just ended a little while ago.

People like me betting on the Colts to win (but in my case, I posted a parlet for the spread, and win by 8). I had to hope the Colts won by 8 points, and a combined total of 49 to win the bet.

Unfortunatly, in the fourth quarter, one minute and thirty-nine seconds left on the clock, and fourth down. Colts have the ball on about the twenty yard line of the Bears. In this situation, you always kick a field goal. If they kick this field goal, the final score would have most likely been 32-17, Colts victory. I would have met my bets promise, and won a lot of money.

Unfortunatly, some complete asshole decided to run the ball on fourth and six. This is unheard of.

I come to the point in my life where I realized that professional sports are rigged. They knew the spread. The spread is set before the game. And vegas would have lost A SHIT LOAD of money, so they didn't kick the field goal. I will never watch professional sports, support any team, or lay wager down ever again on any sport, period. Completely outrageous, and I hope Tony Dungy gets lynched.

Chris

In addition to my previous comment, after shutting my pc down and turned on the news there was a story involving NFL lawyers. The lawyers informed a group that usually throws a huge Super Bowl party at a church with a big tv and alot of people that their party was against the law. Saying it is unlawful to use the name "Super Bowl" in advertising for the party, and unlawful to view the game on a tv bigger than 52". The story said reason being because the ratings system is done by household tv's(smaller size on average normally). This creates more ratings. Prohibiting the game from being watched on a bigger scale does so.
Low and behold, football has become a ratings interested game and money pulls its strings now.

Lets look at the pro bowl of 2007 anyone?? I knew it was rigged before this but what a joke. Manning on the 1 yard line with in first few minutes passes 4 times in a row none even close. LT was in the back field mmm. Stephen Jackson then runs his in easily. Romo bomb in the end, time being added back to the 2 min warning, kick a quick fg instead of running it in from the 1 again after a huge interference. haD THE UNDER AND TEAM CORRECT

i remember one year dallas couldn't beat philly but the giants did the commentators even called it before the game . dallas looses to giants giants beat philly then go to dallas and loose all that happened in the playoffs one year .. also you see one hand catches then the rest of the game fumble everything .. or half time 41 to 3 loosing viewers end game 44 to 35 .. i say it'd be easy to rig games plus the owners talk to each other .. look how theyre pushing green bay this year . i only watch pro ball from the playoffs on . and remember the refs they control it all they can make or break any game

I know some have mentioned the Saints miracle year last year, but what about what lead up to that year. Every magazine I picked up that off season touted Reggie Bush as the next coming of GOD. Yet somehow the Houston Texans decided that they had a good enough running back (can anyone name him) and picked Mario Williams with the number one pick, leaving Bush to the Saints. You can't tell me that the draft wasen't rigged. The NFL needed to give New Orleans something to cheer about because they needed a team in that market, so they got San Diego to give up on a great QB in Brees who went to the Saints than gave them a great RB in Bush. All of a sudden, by the grace of the NFL, they are winners.
